Sustainable Development can be understood as the provision of better conditions for people and the environment, both today and for the indefinite future. According to the Brundtland Report (1987), sustainability is the same as "meeting the needs of the present generation without affecting the ability of future generations to meet theirs."
Due to the events of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, in addition to the growing demand in the civil aviation market, Infraero's goal is the implementation of works for the expansion, renovation and construction of new airports.
Before this scenario, comes the opportunity for correction and implementation of sustainability concepts during the development of new projects, making them environmentally friendly, economically viable, socially just and culturally acceptable.
A few years ago, Infraero incorporated a number of environmental requirements for sustainability in internal documents that meet the criteria for the development of Basic Designs. Since then, Infraero professionals are aware of need to consider the requirements of sustainability as a compulsory subject in their works.
Environmental Sustainability Requirements of Infraero are periodically updated and have guidelines relating to technologies for water reuse, efficiency in air conditioning systems and lighting, use of new materials in civil construction, use of alternative energy, among others.
Moreover, Infraero developed an Environmental Control Plan of Works, to minimize the impact that the construction of a new undertaking causes to natural resources. This is a document containing a set of actions, activities and projects, aimed at ensuring the desirable environmental standards throughout the process of implementing new airport sites, whose documentation shall incorporate the terms of hiring services of implementation of projects.
